✝️In this project lesson, we are continuing our popular 3D cross and hearts project by turning it into a fully 3D, double-sided model! Originally planned as a two-part series, we've added this part three by popular demand so you can learn how to make a stunning piece that looks custom-carved on both sides—perfect for displaying on a table where people can pick it up and admire the detail.
You'll discover how incredibly simple it is to transition a project from single-sided to double-sided using Vectric's powerful mirroring tools, which automatically flip and align your symmetrical components. We'll walk you through editing model thicknesses, leveling base heights, and utilizing the sculpting tool to quickly smooth away any intersecting model flaws. You will also learn critical toolpath techniques for double-sided machining, including rearranging roughing and finishing passes, setting up sturdy rectangular tabs, and prepping your spoil board with non-symmetrical alignment pins to guarantee a flawless flip.
This lesson is demonstrated in Aspire for the 3D modeling steps, but we will also provide the finished STL files so VCarve users can easily import the double-sided model and carve it themselves! It's an excellent intermediate-to-advanced technique that will take your CNC work to the next level and makes for a genuinely marvelous gift idea.
