2-14-2023 Q&A: Cabinet Resizing, 2D to 3D Conversion, Flower Pot Stand Alignment, Clearance for Dados, Dowel Tab Idea

q&a meetup replays Feb 14, 2023

In this Q&A Meetup, woodworking and CNC enthusiasts gathered for a rich discussion on leveraging Vectric software to bring intricate designs to life, from crafting a bespoke bench seat for an awkward alcove to mastering the art of converting images into vectors for complex projects. The session delved into the nuances of resizing cabinets, transforming 2D designs into 3D objects for the fourth axis, and the precise alignment of dowel holes for a flower pot stand. Participants also explored strategies for achieving perfect clearance in dados and grooves, optimizing tab placements for easier machining, and various tips on utilizing Vectric tools for both novice and experienced users. This meetup not only served as a platform for addressing specific project challenges but also highlighted the vibrant community's eagerness to share knowledge, tips, and encouragement. Whether you're looking to refine your CNC skills or seeking inspiration for your next project, this replay offers a wealth of information and insights.

Questions Answered in this Q&A:

  • 00:00:51 - He wants to know how to resize a cabinet that he has imported or drawn completely here
  • 00:19:05 - How can I turn a 2D Vectric into a 3d object I can use with my fourth axis?
  • 00:37:36 - I've created 2d vectors in VCarve Pro to create the parts for a stand to hold 4 small flower pots. The parts created then need to be assembled into the final design. I've cut and assembled one and it worked out fine, although it's tough to get the alignment of the curved rails just right. I'd like to modify my Vectric file to include 1/8" dowel holes to be used to align the parts during glueup. I use Sketchup quite a bit so I am trying to "assemble" the parts there so that I can then mark where the 1/8" holes need to be to align the curved rails to the rest of the assembly, but I'm finding it to be tricky that way. Does anyone have any suggestions?
  • 00:46:14 - How much clearance is recommended for datos and grooves?
  • 00:51:14 - Can you put your tabs where the dowels go, that way you can remove the tabs as you drill the holes?
