1-24-2023 Q&A: Smaller Details, Laser Kerf Width, Guitar Neck Modeling, and More!

q&a meetup replays Jan 24, 2023

In our January 24, 2023, Q&A Meetup, participants navigated a rich landscape of CNC and Vectric software challenges, from resizing detailed projects in VCarve to integrating a JTech laser on Onefinity machines. The session delved deep into complex modeling techniques for unique projects like the Red Special guitar neck, explored strategies for creating and adjusting two-sided STL models, and provided insights into achieving perfect finishes on different materials. Attendees also learned about designing functional base cabinets, mastering 3D cutting techniques for rounded edges, and leveraging Vectric tools for adding textures to models. The discussions extended to practical solutions for generating vectors from 3D models, adjusting wood grain direction in designs, and crafting specialized objects like angled hockey pucks in Aspire. This meetup offered a treasure trove of practical advice, innovative solutions, and community-shared experiences, making it an invaluable resource for both new and experienced CNC enthusiasts aiming to refine their skills and bring their creative visions to life.

Questions Answered in this Q&A:

  • 00:03:31 - I have a file that cut with VCarve Toolpath fine. Then I had to shrink the same to a smaller one, into a smaller flag. Now it's smaller. I can't get the detail needed in the VCarve. Is there anything I can do?
  • 00:07:47 - Recently I bought a JTech 14w laser for my Onefinity. Where can I find what the Kerf width is supposed to be?
  • 00:12:54 - I'm trying to model a red special neck guitar I've gotten so far, but I can only seem to find the right tutorial. Help me finish the professionally as I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • 00:16:20 - Having a problem, creating a two-sided STL from a model. I keep seeing the back of the neck model on the outside part the cut file looks good in preview, but it does this on export.
  • 00:26:40 - I did the heart lesson from the live Thursday lesson never came across this before. My VCarve letters on the walnut are fine, but the maple, it ripped up even on the chamfer. This was a test piece. Any idea what happened? Maybe just a piece of maple, but the feeds and speeds were the same for both pieces, which makes me think it's just the grain of that.
  • 00:30:00 - So I've been watching tutorials. We're trying to model guitar neck in the free Aspire software. I've gotten to the stage where you can see attached pictures. The area I need to help with is Volute at the base of the headstock. I've modeled in two separate bits, but as I don't know how to do any other way, I need to join the two to make one whole.
  • 00:39:02 - If I am designing base cabinets and want to cut in dados in the sides for the bottom and holes for adjustable shelves an a rabbit for the back an also cut out the toe kick to my specs. can that be saved as a template to later on be resized to the next set of cabinets that might be larger or smaller larger.
  • 00:43:23 - How can I round over the edges of this model during 3D cutting? Is it possible to do this after creating the 3D object from the vectors?
  • 00:50:13 - So do I have to create vector from the edges, I want to round over with the bit?
  • 00:52:17 - Do I have to freehand the vectors then when I form the 3D model?
  • 00:54:01 - The model's already created. Is there way to create vectors from a 3D model? If you don't have the original vectors?
  • 00:56:12 - I want to add an offset around the hard area down below also, I want then all the remaining areas, I want to do a texturing on it.
  • 00:58:15 - Can you rotate the grain of that wood 90 degrees?
  • 01:03:45 - Kyle is a live Vectric on Thursday. If so, what time Eastern Time zone?
  • 01:04:45 - Making on Aspire something that looks like a hockey puck, but with a little angle between the base and the top.
